El ciclista español Alberto Contador (Astana) se adjudicó su segunda Vuelta al País Vasco consecutiva tras vencer en la sexta y última etapa de la ronda vasca, una contrarreloj individual de 24 kilómetros con salida y llegada en Zalla (Vizcaya), en la que volvió a la senda del triunfo tras marcarse una nueva exhibición contra el crono.
Contador, que ya se proclamó campeón de la París-Niza y de la Vuelta al Algarve esta temporada, firmó su segunda victoria de etapa en la la 49º edición de la prueba vasca y volvió a reivindcar, encima de la bicicleta, su superioridad en una campaña que estará marcada por su vuelta al Tour de Francia de este próximo verano.
En una jornada que volvió a estar marcada por la climatología adversa, el ciclista de Pinto aventajó en 22 segundos a su compañero de equipo, Antonio Colom, segundo, y en 45 a Samuel Sánchez, tercero, lo que le permite sumar su tercera victoria de la temporada contra el reloj, tras las conseguidas en el Algarve y en Niza.
Desde el inicio de la etapa, el vencedor de la pasada edición puso terreno de por medio al desmarcarse en el primer sector de 12 kilómetros a Vandevelde (Garmin) y a Rogers (Columbia-High Road), que no pudieron ganar la etapa a pesar de su buen inicio.
De esta forma, Alberto Contador demuestra su gran momento de forma tras retornar a la victoria después de ser segundo en la Vuelta a Castilla y León, en la que tuvo que ceder ante su compañero de escuadra, el estadounidense Levi Leipheimer.
