El mejor deportista extranjero del año tiene su corazón en Barcelona. Aunque nacido en Rosario, Argentina, hace 23 años y medio, el pequeño Leo llegó a La Masia con algo más de 12 años y desde entonces no ha parado de marcar goles en azulgrana.
Es difícil determinar si Leo alcanzó su plenitud o todavía puede mejorar. Ningún año ha sido tan certero como en 2010. Hasta 58 veces marcó Messi en partido oficial, dando 58 razones -hay muchas más- a los deportistas españoles que le han votado.

Aunque también les habría bastado para considerarle el mejor deportista extranjero de 2010 sólo con lo que va de la presente temporada, que abrió con un hat trick al Sevilla en la Supercopa de España. Ha sido capaz de marcar a pares en siete ocasiones en lo que va de curso y estuvo anotando durante 10 partidos seguidos, racha que paradójicamente se cortó en el reciente 5-0 al Madrid.
Los números no reflejan sus revolucionados arranques o cambios de ritmo con el balón cosido a la bota, su forma de armar cualquiera de las dos piernas velozmente, la visión de juego que le permite ser letal en el último pase, sus regates explosivos con la cabeza agachada con la misma timidez y humildad con la que atiende a los medios, o sus paredes imposibles con alguno de sus aliados, sobre todo Xavi e Iniesta, que le acompañarán en la gala del Balón de Oro del próximo 11 de enero.
Para entonces, Messi llevará nueve días en Barcelona, puesto que Guardiola le ha permitido alargar sus vacaciones en Argentina, con la familia, tres días más que al resto. Se lo merece el delantero y se lo merece el país que dio a uno de los mejores futbolistas de la historia. Triunfar con su selección es, por cierto, su única asignatura pendiente.
