Merkel, elegida "persona del año" por la revista Time

WASHINGTON.- La canciller alemana, Angela Merkel, fue elegida hoy por la revista estadounidense Time como "persona del año" por su papel en las crisis griega y de los refugiados, así como ante el conflicto en Ucrania.
"Por pedir a su país más de lo que la mayoría de los políticos osarían, por mantenerse firme ante la tiranía y el oportunismo y por proporcionar un liderazgo moral inalterable en un mundo donde escasea", argumentó la revista al anunciar la elección de Merkel como "persona del año".
Según Time, Merkel desempeñó este año un papel "indispensable" en la gestión de la crisis de la deuda griega y "lideró" la respuesta de Occidente ante el "robo" del presidente ruso, Vladímir Putin, en Ucrania.
Merkel, cuarta mujer designada "persona del año" por Time, también se interpuso ante aquellos que desafiaron "el principio de las fronteras abiertas" en la crisis de migrantes y refugiados en Europa, de acuerdo con la revista.
Frente al "pasado nacionalista, genocida y militarista" de su país, Merkel "blandió un conjunto diferente de valores -humanidad, generosidad, tolerancia- para demostrar cómo la gran fortaleza de Alemania puede ser usada para salvar, en lugar de para destruir", enfatizó la publicación.
En 2014 la revista eligió como personas del año a los profesionales que lucharon contra la epidemia de ébola en África Occidental, "por arriesgar, por persistir, por sacrificar y por salvar vidas".
