Cientos de personas se han reunido este lunes para dar su último adiós a Michael Brown, el joven negro que mató a tiros un policía blanco en Ferguson, Misuri, el pasado 9 de agosto. Música pop cristiana ha acompañado el acto, que se ha llevado a cabo en calma y sin incidentes.
El ataúd del joven estaba rodeado de fotografías de él cuando era niño, cuando se graduó en la escuela y llevando su gorra de béisbol de los St. Louis Cardinals, la cual descansaba también sobre el ataúd. "No hay despedidas para nosotros, donde queira que estés, siempre estarás en nuestros corazones", rezaba un cartel que acompañaba a una de las fotos.
En el exterior, los asistentes al acto cantaron el himno a los derechos civiles We shall overcome (Nosotros venceremos).
Alrededor de la iglesia había una elevada presencia policial, pero no ha habido ningún incidente a pesar de que las autoridades estaban preparadas para un posible enfrentamiento, aunque los disturbios han disminuido significativamente en los últimos días.
Tras los disturbios que han sacudido Ferguson en las últimas semanas, el padre de Michael Brown hizo un llamamiento a la calma el domingo, pidiendo que esta se mantuviese al menos durante el funeral de su hijo. "Lo único que quiero es paz mientras despido a mi hijo", declaró en una manifestación contra la violencia policial que dirigió el domingo con el líder de los derechos civiles, el reverendo Al Sharpton.
