Un informe que los ministros de Economía de la Unión Europea previsiblemente respaldarán hoy pide a los estados miembros estudiar la validez del copago sanitario para garantizar la cada vez más costosa financiación de la sanidad pública. El documento indica que el envejecimiento de la población ha puesto contra las cuerdas a los sistemas de salud de los países de la UE, que deberán "fomentar un uso rentable de la atención sanitaria, a través de incentivos adecuados incluidos sistemas de copago y de pago al proveedor".
Aunque no incluye plazos ni es vinculante, el documento marca la clara preferencia de los 27 por sistemas de financiación mixtos para complementar las medidas de austeridad actualmente en marcha y prevenir la explosión del gasto en sanidad.
Además del copago, los 27 piden rentabilizar al máximo hasta el último euro invertido, algo que pasa por limitar el gasto sanitario sólo a los pacientes que realmente lo necesiten. El informe constata que hay "margen para mejorar el estado de salud de la población sin incrementar el gasto sanitario", un aumento que sería inviable en el actual contexto económico. También llama a reforzar la atención primaria y mejorar la gestión de los medicamentos que sufraga el Estado.
