El Consejo Presidencial iraquí fijó hoy el 6 de marzo de 2010 como nueva fecha para la celebración de las próximas elecciones generales, informó el canal de televisión iraquí "Al Iraqia".
La fecha se ha dado a conocer después de una reunión del Consejo Presidencial, formado por el presidente del país, el kurdo Yalal Talabani, y los dos vicepresidentes, el suní Tarek Al Hashemi, y el chií, Adel Abdel Mahdi, con una delegación del Consejo Supremo Electoral y de la misión de la ONU en Irak (UNAMI).
Este anuncio se produce un día después de que Al Hashemi asegurara que no iba a vetar la ley electoral que regirá los comicios generales del 2010, después de que el Parlamento la hubiera enmendado la noche anterior por tercera vez tras semanas de debates.
"La nueva ley electoral, que ha sido aprobada por unanimidad, reconoce los derechos de las minorías y de los expatriados", dijo en un comunicado Al Hashemi, quien antes de dar su beneplácito a la ley forzó la introducción de varias enmiendas.
El Parlamento iraquí decidió al filo de la medianoche del pasado domingo aprobar una nueva reforma de la norma electoral para aumentar los escaños de la Cámara de los 275 actuales a 325, y no a 323, tal y como estipulaba una modificación anterior de la ley.
Esta propuesta, que permitirá incrementar la representación de las minorías y los expatriados, como pedía Al Hashemi, forma parte de una iniciativa de la UNAMI, a la que el vicepresidente se mostró favorable, para dar salida a la crisis electoral.
Desde ambas misiones diplomáticas se había instado a la Comisión Suprema Independiente Electoral (CSIE) de Irak a que convocara los comicios para el próximo febrero, en vez del 21 de enero como estaba previsto.
