La generalización del uso de anticonceptivos, la mejora de los programas de planificación familiar y la relajación de las leyes han hecho posible el descenso de abortos en el mundo en un 9% entre 1995 y 2003, según un estudio presentado ayer por el Instituto Guttmacher en Londres.
El informe señala que esta tendencia se ha detectado tanto en los países desarrollados como en aquellos en vías de desarrollo, excepto en África, que sigue siendo un asunto pendiente en materia reproductiva, informa Efe.
La directora ejecutiva del Instituto, Sharon Camp, destacó ayer que la principal conclusión que ha de extraerse del estudio es que "dar a las mujeres los medios necesarios para decidir por ellas mismas cuándo quedarse embarazadas reduce la incidencia de los embarazos no deseados y, por tanto, el número de abortos".
El dato más positivo es que el número de intervenciones para interrumpir voluntariamente el embarazo pasó de 45,5 millones en 1995 a 41,6 millones en 2003, una reducción que los investigadores atribuyen, además de a la expansión del uso de distintos métodos anticonceptivos, a la progresiva liberalización de las leyes sobre el aborto en los últimos 15 años.
Sin embargo, preocupa que casi el 50% de los abortos practicados en 2003 fuera "clandestino", es decir, no tuvo garantías ni supervisión médica. Este tipo de prácticas le cuesta la vida a 70.000 mujeres al año.
