El presidente de Bolivia, Evo Morales, se declaró el jueves en huelga de hambre junto a los movimientos sociales que le apoyan para exigir al Congreso Nacional la aprobación de la ley electoral necesaria para convocar las elecciones generales del 6 de diciembre.
Morales dijo que se siente obligado a asumir esta medida frente a la "negligencia de un grupo de parlamentarios neoliberales" que impide la aprobación de la ley electoral.
El Congreso Nacional de Bolivia celebra desde el miércoles una maratoniana sesión para aprobar el régimen electoral transitorio establecido en la nueva Constitución.
La oposición rechaza el proyecto de ley, alegando que da ventaja a la reelección de Morales. Discrepa también sobre el cupo de escaños que debe otorgarse exclusivamente a los pueblos indígenas, sobre la habilitación del voto de los bolivianos en el exterior y sobre el padrón electoral.
Con esta medida de presión, el presidente quiere evitar que la negociación parlamentaria se postergue hasta después de Semana Santa.
La huelga de hambre de Morales le ha obligado a posponer el viaje previsto a Cuba, según informó el portavoz presidencial, Iván Canelas. "Si en las próximas horas se resolviera la situación en el país, el presidente evaluará si todavía existe la posibilidad de viajar y responder a esta invitación", dijo Canelas.
Evo Morales se ha convertido en el segundo presidente de la historia democrática de Bolivia que recurre a la huelga de hambre como medida de presión frente a sus opositores. En 1956 el entonces presidente Hernán Siles Zuazo se declaró en huelga de hambre para evitar la violencia, en una época de hiperinflación y de duros choques con la poderosa Central Obrera Boliviana.
