El Reino Unido afronta "una grave y real amenaza de terrorismo", dijo hoy la ministra británica de Interior, Theresa May, tras la detención de doce hombres en varias localidades del país sospechosos de la preparación e instigación de actos terroristas.
"He sido totalmente informada sobre la operación policial que se ha resuelto con doce arrestos, pero, por razones obvias, no es apropiado que comente más detalles en este punto de lo que podría resultar en una compleja y prolongada investigación", explicó a los medios.
La titular de Interior en el Gobierno del conservador David Cameron agradeció el trabajo de la policía por "mantener la seguridad en el país".
Por su parte, la Policía Metropolitana de Londres pidió hoy a los residentes y turistas que se encuentren en la capital británica que mantengan la vigilancia y contacten con las autoridades si observan algo sospechoso.
Ese fue el mensaje transmitido por el asistente del comisario de la Policía Metropolitana, John Yates, tras la detención esta mañana de doce hombres de entre 17 y 28 años dentro de una operación antiterrorista.
Los hombres -cinco de ellos de Cardiff (Gales), cuatro de Stoke-on-Trent (Inglaterra) y tres de Londres- fueron arrestados hacia las 05.00 GMT en sus domicilios o en sus alrededores, bajo la sospecha de comisión, preparación e instigación de actos terroristas.
Hasta el momento, la policía no ha podido dar detalles de las presuntas actividades terroristas de los doce retenidos.
Yates confirmó que era "absolutamente necesaria" esa operación antiterrorista, dada la información en poder de la policía y el nivel de amenaza en el Reino Unido.
