Benedicto XVI celebra la tradicional Misa del Gallo en la basílica de San Pedro del Vaticano, la sexta de su pontificado, que de nuevo oficia dos horas antes de la medianoche, para evitar que se fatigue debido su edad, 83 años, y que mañana tiene que oficiar los ritos de Navidad.
En una noche lluviosa y desapacible, el pontífice oficia la misa en la que la Iglesia desde la noche de los tiempos conmemora el nacimiento de Jesús.
A la Misa del Gallo asisten miles de personas que desde varias horas antes llenan el templo vaticano.
El rito ha comezado con las kalendas, el antiguo texto que anuncia el nacimiento de Cristo, que ha sido cantado al principio de la misa, en latín, por un cantor de la Capilla Sixtina.
La basílica vaticana luce sus mejores galas y una imagen del Niño Jesús preside la ceremonia.
Esta misa del Gallo trae a la memoria lo ocurrido el pasado año, cuando una mujer, la ítalo-suiza Susanna Maiolo, de 25 años, saltó una valla del interior de la basílica vaticana cuando el Papa se dirigía hacia el altar mayor y lo arrojó al suelo, así como al cardenal Roger Etchegaray, que caminaba a su lado y se rompió el fémur.
