Entre 45.000 y 50.000 personas pueden haber perecido a causa del terremoto en Haití, según Víctor Jackson, un responsable de Cruz Roja haitiano, citado hoy por la emisora local Radio Metropole.
Tras señalar que "nadie sabe con precisión ni está en situación de confirmar una cifra determinada" de muertos, Jackson manifestó que la Cruz Roja calcula que son entre 45.000 y 50.000 los que perdieron la vida a causa de los terremotos registrados el martes y que hay tres millones de personas damnificadas.
"Pensamos que tres millones de personas han sido afectadas en el país, que han resultado heridas o que han perdido sus hogares", señaló.
La emisora no precisó donde hizo Jackson estas declaraciones.
La capital de Haití, Puerto Príncipe, es la ciudad más afectada por los sismos del martes. El epicentro del más fuerte, de 7 grados de la escala Richter, se situó a solo 15 kilómetros de la capital.
Cientos de edificios se desplomaron o resultaron dañados por las ondas sísmicas, algunos tan significativos como el Palacio Nacional, sede de la Presidencia, la catedral de Puerto Príncipe, o el Hotel Christopher, sede de las Naciones Unidas.
A falta de una cifra oficial de muertos y heridos, las autoridades, como el presidente Rene Preval o el primer ministro Jean Max Bellerive han hablado de miles, decenas de miles o incluso "cientos de miles" de víctimas.
Los hospitales que han quedado en pie están desbordados, en las calles se acumulan los cadáveres y hay numerosos heridos esperando asistencia entre ruinas y escombros.
La ayuda de la comunidad internacional, que ha respondido con generosidad a los llamamientos de las autoridades del país más pobre de América, está llegando desde ayer, a pesar de que el aeropuerto de Puerto Príncipe resultó dañado en el terremoto.
