Ecuador se incorporará al grupo de países que conforman la Alternativa Bolivariana para las Américas (ALBA) en la cumbre extraordinaria que se celebrará en la ciudad venezolana de Valencia el 24 de junio. El ALBA es una propuesta de integración regional formada por siete países latinoamericanos Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Honduras, Dominica y San Vicente y las Granadinas cuyo objetivo es contraponer la cooperación económica al modelo que propugna el Area de Libre Comercio de las Américas (ALCA).
Ecuador ya participaba de las reuniones del ALBA como observador y en diciembre propuso crear una moneda virtual, el sucre, que sustituya al dólar como divisa entre los paises que lo integran. El presidente ecuatoriano, Rafael Correa, ya anunció que su país estudiaba "las formas" para convertirse en un miembro de pleno derecho. "Es una forma de luchar contra la pobreza desde una posición de izquierda", dijo.
