Las personas pueden desarrollar lesionesen la piel por el contacto con cabras y ovejas infectadas con elvirus Orf a través de la preparación de la carne o al sacrificara los animales, dijo una agencia federal estadounidense en uninforme que apunta a los médicos de diversas comunidadesétnicas.
El virus Orf, a veces mal diagnosticado como una enfermedadmás grave como el ántrax, se transmite más comúnmente a loshumanos en granjas.
También se ha reportado en niños que visitaron zoológicos ygranjas, informaron los Centros para el Control y la Prevenciónde Enfermedades de Estados Unidos (CDC por su sigla en inglés).
Pero los CDC indicaron que las personas también podríancontraer el virus Orf al preparar carne de oveja o cabra paraconsumo familiar o cuando se mata a los animales, y detallaroncuatro casos de este tipo en el informe.
"En comunidades étnicamente diversas, los proveedores deatención médica podrían desconocer sobre pacientes con este tipode contacto animal y los incrementos estacionales en el contactoasociado con eventos religiosos", indicó el reporte.
"La popularidad de las granjas y carnicerías hogareñas también incrementa las oportunidades de exposiciones familiaresal Orf", agregó.
El informe indicó que en el 2010, un hombre de 42 años enMassachusetts asistió en el sacrificio de un cordero para unferiado musulmán, sosteniendo la cabeza con su mano izquierda.Cinco días después, apareció una pequeña lesión en uno de susdedos de la mano izquierda.
En otro caso, un hombre de 35 años de descendencia etíope,se cortó el pulgar izquierdo con un cuchillo mientras realizabala matanza de un cordero como parte de las festividades dePascua, y luego padeció una lesión en ese dedo.
Las lesiones por el virus Orf suelen curarse dentro dealgunas semanas, dijo a Reuters la veterinaria de los CDCDanielle Tack. Los médicos, particularmente en las zonasurbanas, pueden a veces diagnosticar mal el Orf, agregó laexperta.
