Israel y Estados Unidos inician hoy, unas maniobras conjuntas de envergadura de sus fuerzas aéreas en la que simularán ataques con misiles al Estado judío y su detección en vuelo a través de la homologación de sus radares.
En el ejercicio, conocido bajo el nombre de Juniper Cobra 10, participarán la Comandancia Europea de los Estados Unidos (EUCOM) y el Ejército israelí, y se prolongará hasta el próximo 5 de noviembre, destaca un comunicado de las Fuerzas Armadas de Israel.
Se trata del quinto ejercicio de este tipo que se llevan a cabo cada dos años y cuyos preparativos se iniciaron hace medio año.
El simulacro pondrá a prueba el sistema Arrow (Jetz) para la interceptación de misiles, el THAAD (un sistema de defensa aérea a gran altitud), una fragata con el sistema de defensa AEGIS, así como los sistemas antiaéreos Patriot y Hawk, según apuntan medios locales.
Un millar de efectivos de la EUCOM y un número similar de fuerzas del Ejército israelí tomarán parte en los ejercicios, así como un pequeño número de miembros de las fuerzas del Ejército de EEUU en Europa (USAREUR).
El diario israelí "Yediot Aharonot" dice que durante las maniobras se simulará el lanzamiento de misiles de largo alcance desde países como Irán, Siria y Líbano, y la realización de una prueba de interceptación "en vivo" de uno de esos cohetes.
El Gobierno israelí ha notificado de las maniobras a países vecinos, mientras que el Ejército advierte en el comunicado que "el ejercicio no es en respuesta a ningún suceso a nivel mundial".
