El español David Ferrer alcanzó por primera vez la final del Masters 1.000 de Montecarlo, al derrotar al austríaco Jurgen Melzer, verdugo del suizo Roger Federer en cuartos, por 6-3 y 6-2.
Ferrer, semifinalista en el Principado el pasado año, y ganador esta temporada en los torneos de Auckland y Acapulco, luchará en la final contra el vencedor del encuentro entre el español Rafael Nadal, seis veces campeón de este torneo, y el británico Andy Murray, partido que comenzará a las 15:00 horas.
En los dos últimos enfrentamientos, Roland Garros y París Bercy el año pasado, Melzer había ganado a Ferrer, y partía con cierta ventaja psicológica. Pero hoy, el tenista de Xavea cambió ese guión al endosar al austríaco la cuarta derrota en seis encuentros.
El duelo no comenzó nada bien para Ferrer, que dejó que su rival dominase por 3-1, pero a partir de ahí el alicantino fue consolidándose en el fondo de la pista, para marcar él el ritmo del encuentro y ganar el primer set en 38 minutos.
Melzer era el primer austríaco en alcanzar esta ronda desde que Thomas Muster logró el título hace 15 años. Sin embargo, el austríaco no pudo culminar su gesta a pesar de que lo intentó todo: las famosas dejadas con las que alcanzó las semifinales de Roland Garros el pasado año, o las variaciones múltiples en los intercambios.
Todo infructuoso ante el rocoso juego del sexto jugador del mundo que solo cedió una vez su saque, a pesar de que Melzer dispuso de nueve ocasiones para romperlo.
Con la victoria de Ferrer en una hora y 19 minutos, se cumple una máxima en el torneo monegasco. De nuevo habrá un español en la final, tal y como ha sucedido en los seis últimos años, Nadal, y en ocho de los nueve últimos, en 2004 no se cumplió esta premisa.
