La sonda Mars Phoenix Lander ya ha puesto brazo a la obra en el polo norte marciano. La imagen de la derecha fue tomada por la cámara del brazo robótico de Phoenix y muestra material de la superficie de Marte recogido durante el primer test de ese dispositivo el 1 de junio, durante el séptimo día de permanencia de la sonda sobre el planeta rojo.
La muestra fue tomada en la zona de excavación conocida informalmente como 'Sota de Corazones'. Los científicos creen que las manchas blancas en la parte derecha de la imagen podrían ser trozos de hielo o sal. Creen también que este material blanco es, probablemente, el mismo material visto en imágenes previas debajo de la sonda. El color de esta imagen se logró iluminando la pala del brazo robótico con un grupo de diodos que emitían luz roja, verde y azul.
